Simultaneously, the Washington Capitals have terminated Love’s employment. Love had been an assistant on coach Spencer Carbery’s staff for the past two years and was placed on leave last month in light of the ongoing investigation. The specifics of the investigation have not been disclosed.
In a statement, the Capitals emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards of behavior and responsibility. They announced Love’s immediate dismissal from his role, noting his absence from the team since the development camp in July.
The NHL specified that Love’s suspension was due to behavior deemed harmful to the league, pending a comprehensive investigation. Love may seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season, subject to specific conditions.
Love, who celebrated his 41st birthday in June, was considered a strong contender for coaching positions in Pittsburgh and Seattle, among other potential opportunities. Prior to joining Washington, he served as the head coach for the Calgary Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate from 2021 to 2023.
