By leveraging advanced DNA analysis and genealogical research on platforms like Ancestry.com, Toronto police managed to identify Joseph George Sutherland as the perpetrator behind Gilmour’s and another victim’s killings. Sutherland pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in 2023 and received a life sentence in 2024.

The ban on police access to Ancestry.com’s data has garnered criticism from law enforcement officials, including Acting Det. Sgt. Steve Smith, who heads the Toronto Police Service’s cold case unit. Smith emphasized the essential role of genealogical data in investigations and questioned the rationale behind the restrictions imposed by the company.

Privacy concerns have also emerged with the widespread adoption of genetic genealogy, prompting calls for transparency and safeguards to protect individuals’ rights. While the tool has been instrumental in solving heinous crimes, experts stress the importance of balancing its use with privacy considerations and ethical standards.

In response to the access restrictions, some police departments, like Montreal’s, have adapted by adhering to stricter privacy protocols when utilizing genealogical databases.
