“British Troops Deployed to Israel for Gaza Ceasefire”

-

British troops have been deployed to Israel to assist in overseeing a delicate ceasefire in Gaza following a request from the US. The UK Defense Secretary, John Healey, announced that a senior commander and a team of military personnel will be stationed in the area, with Britain playing a key role in a multinational force. The British commander will serve as the deputy in the American-led Civil Military Coordination Centre in Israel, where troops from Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates are also expected to participate.

This development comes shortly after Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the UK had no intentions of sending soldiers as part of the force. Speaking in London, Mr. Healey emphasized that Britain will support monitoring the ceasefire and contribute specialized expertise and skills. The truce, brokered by US President Donald Trump, faced a test when Israel accused Hamas of killing two soldiers, prompting Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza that resulted in casualties among Palestinians. However, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire.

According to a Ministry of Defence spokesperson, UK planning officers have joined the US-led Civil Military Coordination Centre to aid in post-conflict stability planning for Gaza. The US has agreed to deploy up to 200 troops to support the force, with the British contingent, like the Americans, not operating within Gaza. The force’s specific role, chain of command, and legal status are still being finalized.

Additionally, the multinational force is expected to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, particularly addressing delays faced by food convoys due to logistical issues.
