Canadian actors have received several nominations for the Actor Awards, SAG-AFTRA’s annual event celebrating outstanding performances in Hollywood films and television/streaming shows. The nominees were unveiled by Connor Storrie from “Heated Rivalry” and Janelle James from “Abbott Elementary.”
Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara are in the running for best leading performances in their respective categories for Apple TV’s “The Studio,” a creation of Vancouver-born Rogen. Martin Short is nominated alongside Rogen in the leading actor category for his role in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Both “The Studio” and “Only Murders in the Building” also secured nominations for exceptional performances by an ensemble in a comedy series. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be live-streamed on Netflix from Los Angeles on March 1.
The Actor Awards, previously known as the SAG Awards, serve as a precursor to the Academy Awards, and the nominations announced on Wednesday could have a significant impact on the chances of “One Battle After Another,” winner of the Critics Choice Award. The film by Paul Thomas Anderson leads with a remarkable seven nominations in the movie categories.
Competing for exceptional performance by a cast in a motion picture, “One Battle After Another” faces off against “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” and “Sinners.” The movie’s principal cast members each received individual acting nominations.
Leonardo DiCaprio contends for best leading actor, while Chase Infiniti, playing DiCaprio’s daughter, is nominated for best actress. The film’s Teyana Taylor and supporting actors Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn are also nominated.
In the television and streaming series categories, “The Studio” received the most nominations with a total of five, following its success at the Primetime Emmys. The series leads in the comedy nominations at the upcoming Golden Globes as well.
“The White Lotus” secured the most nominations in the drama field with four nods, including outstanding ensemble. The awards ceremony promises to be a competitive event showcasing the best talents in the industry.
