Roman Sadovsky is embracing the challenge ahead as competition heats up in Canadian men’s figure skating. With Keegan Messing making a comeback and Stephen Gogolev resurging, a battle is brewing for the lone men’s spot at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, a scenario that excites Sadovsky.
“I thrive on competition. The more, the better. Competition is my driving force, and it fuels my motivation,” expressed Sadovsky, the reigning national men’s champion. He will be among the 18 Canadian athletes competing at Skate Canada International in Saskatoon this weekend, a crucial stop on the Grand Prix circuit.
Having clinched his second national title last January, Sadovsky seemed like the frontrunner for the Olympic spot until Messing’s return announcement in August. Messing, a two-time Olympian with impressive scores, could pose a significant challenge if he returns to top form.
Anticipating Messing’s return, Sadovsky remained unfazed, citing prior knowledge through grapevine sources. “I was prepared and expected it,” he remarked, emphasizing that it hasn’t shifted his focus or training goals. His coach, Tracey Wainman, highlighted Sadovsky’s ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances, recalling past instances like filling in for Messing at the 2022 Olympics due to unforeseen events.
While Messing won’t be at Skate Canada International, Sadovsky will face Gogolev once more. The competition between them has been intense, with each showcasing their skills at different events. Sadovsky attributes his recent success to mental maturity, enabling him to handle setbacks better and stay focused during performances.
At 26, Sadovsky recognizes the longevity of his career in a sport dominated by younger athletes. He remains optimistic about his current form but acknowledges the need for self-assessment post-season to determine his future in figure skating. Despite the uncertainties, Sadovsky remains committed to enjoying the present season and the thrill of competitive skating.
