Despite Canadian Thanksgiving occurring recently, La Maison B&B in Gravelbourg hosted American guests sharing in the holiday festivities. Amidst tensions between Canada and the U.S., data reveals that American visitors have continued their tradition of coming to Saskatchewan for fishing and hunting. Toos Giesen-Stefiuk, the owner of the B&B, appreciates the economic boost these visitors bring to the community.
Giesen-Stefiuk estimates that hunters contribute around $100,000 annually to the town, which has a population of just under 1,000 residents according to the 2021 census. These visitors, some traveling from states like Michigan and Arkansas, engage in bird hunting activities not easily accessible in their home regions.
Many of the visiting hunters have longstanding traditions of coming to Gravelbourg and have formed close relationships with the locals over the years. The outfitting sector in Saskatchewan sees significant revenue from the influx of U.S. anglers and hunters, with Tourism Saskatchewan reporting that 90% of outfitter clients are American, generating $150 million annually.
Despite concerns raised by some outfitters regarding international tensions affecting client visits, Saskatchewan has seen consistent numbers of American visitors purchasing hunting and fishing licenses. Tourism Saskatchewan remains optimistic about continued American travel to the province due to positive perceptions of Canada, a strong U.S. dollar, and the exceptional outdoor experiences Saskatchewan offers.
The visiting hunters in Gravelbourg remain unfazed by geopolitical issues and trade disputes, focusing on enjoying the camaraderie and peaceful atmosphere. Giesen-Stefiuk emphasizes the importance of friendship over political differences, fostering an environment where nationalities are secondary to shared experiences and a tranquil way of life.
Gravelbourg not only attracts hunters but also offers unique experiences like viewing the northern lights away from city lights. Visitors like Dunbar appreciate the serene setting and diverse natural attractions the town provides.
