“Hyundai Explores Canadian Hydrogen Collaboration”

-

Hyundai is currently exploring potential collaboration opportunities within the Canadian hydrogen energy sector, as the South Korean automaker places its bets on decarbonized vehicles shaping the future of the automotive industry. This development follows the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between Canada and South Korea, focusing on cooperation across various key industries, including auto and battery manufacturing.

While Hyundai does not have immediate plans to establish an auto manufacturing plant in Canada, the company is actively assessing a variety of collaboration possibilities, particularly in the hydrogen energy sector, to facilitate Canada’s transition towards clean energy. Hydrogen-powered vehicles offer advantages such as extended range and quicker refueling compared to electric vehicles. However, widespread adoption would necessitate the creation of new infrastructure for hydrogen cars, a cost that many companies are hesitant to undertake as they expand their electric vehicle programs.

Hyundai has placed a significant emphasis on hydrogen as a potential fuel source for their vehicles, diverging from some competitors who have scaled back on this technology. Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association in Toronto, noted that Hyundai recognizes the current importance of hydrogen in the industry, particularly for trucks and heavy vehicles, as evidenced by the launch of the world’s first heavy-duty commercial trucks in 2020.

As other automakers retreat from hydrogen initiatives, Hyundai remains committed to advancing in this field. Stellantis discontinued its hydrogen fuel cell program last summer, while General Motors followed suit in October, citing the challenges of establishing a sustainable fuel cell business. Despite the uncertainties, Hyundai’s strategic focus on hydrogen aligns with its position in the Canadian market, where it commands a significant market share, just behind Toyota, Ford, and General Motors.

Volpe highlighted the potential for a fruitful partnership between Hyundai and the Canadian energy sector, emphasizing the national scope of potential collaborations given advancements in hydrogen technology across various regions. Despite facing challenges, such as a recall of nearly 1,600 NEXO vehicles in Canada and the United States in 2024 due to fuel leak risks, Hyundai remains optimistic about the prospects of hydrogen-fueled cars in the evolving automotive landscape.
