In a recent interview with Irish forest manager John O’Reilly, he shared his initial reaction upon seeing a video of what appeared to be a lion in an Irish forest. O’Reilly expressed skepticism about the existence of a lion in the area but also admitted that the animal in the footage did indeed resemble a lion. However, it was later revealed that the creature was actually a brown Newfoundland dog that had been given a lion-style haircut.
The story began with timber harvesters working for O’Reilly’s forest management company in County Clare, Ireland, noticing a large animal moving around the woods. Despite not getting a clear view of the animal, one of the truck drivers managed to capture it on camera, leading to the viral video circulating online.
An Garda SÃochána, the national police force of Ireland, investigated the reports of a lion sighting and identified the “culprit” as a Newfoundland dog named Mouse with an unconventional haircut. Police confirmed the dog’s identity and stated that Mouse seemed pleased with the attention his video was receiving.
This incident is not the first time a dog has been mistaken for another animal due to its appearance. O’Reilly speculated that Mouse may have been groomed to resemble a lion for Halloween festivities. However, experts caution against shaving a Newfoundland’s coat except for medical reasons, as it can have adverse effects on their health.
While the owners of Mouse remain unidentified, O’Reilly pondered the motivation behind the lion haircut and humorously suggested that Mouse would make for a surprising trick-or-treat visitor with his lion-like appearance.
