Attention to all lemonade stand operators: This summer, you will need to use fresh ingredients as Minute Maid is ceasing its production of frozen juices due to changing consumer preferences. This move by Coca-Cola, the parent company, will discontinue frozen canned orange juice, lemonade, Fruitopia fruit punch, and Five Alive juice blend by April in response to evolving customer demands.
Coca-Cola’s decision to exit the frozen juice market in Canada and the U.S. is part of a wider trend among juice producers. With another major Canadian juice producer also withdrawing from the market, the availability of frozen concentrated juice for Canadians may soon dwindle after years of being accessible.
Lassonde, known for brands like Oasis, Kiju, and Rougemont, also exited the frozen juice category last year, citing decreasing demand for concentrated juice products. The disappearance of flagship brands and store labels from shelves signals a fundamental lack of market demand rather than branding or pricing issues, according to Zhe Zhang, an assistant professor at Western University’s Ivey Business School.
Consumer habits have shifted away from frozen juice concentrate, a product that was popularized in the 1940s but has now lost its appeal. The decline in juice consumption, including frozen varieties, is attributed to changing preferences and the rise of alternative beverages promising health benefits like kombucha and prebiotic sodas.
As traditional juice brands struggle to adapt to evolving tastes, smaller and medium-sized Canadian companies see an opportunity to fill the gap left by discontinued products like Minute Maid frozen juices. This shift in the market landscape presents a chance for local businesses to innovate and cater to changing consumer needs.
For some Canadians, the discontinuation of frozen juice products may evoke nostalgia, especially for those who used them in traditional recipes like “slush.” Despite the sentimental value attached to these products, the overall market trend suggests that frozen juice concentrate is no longer a sustainable commodity.
