Paris Mayor Ariel Weil, situated in central Paris where the Louvre is located, has expressed his belief that the museum’s security system failed during the recent crown jewel heist. This contradicts the statement made by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati. Following the theft of the priceless French crown jewels by thieves who breached the museum’s security early Sunday morning, criticism regarding the museum’s security measures swiftly emerged nationwide.
In response to the incident, Minister Dati alternated between attributing the mishap to mismanagement by the museum’s leadership and emphasizing the effectiveness of the museum’s security. She stated before lawmakers in the National Assembly on Tuesday that the Louvre’s security system did not fail but rather worked as intended.
However, Mayor Weil has raised doubts about this assertion, citing the speed at which the burglary occurred – taking only seven minutes for the thieves to break into the Apollo gallery window and execute the heist – and the substantial value of the stolen items, estimated at $143 million Canadian dollars.
In an interview with “As It Happens” host Nil Koksal on Wednesday, Mayor Weil shared his concerns and emphasized the necessity for the city of Paris to have a more active role in future security planning for the Louvre.
When asked about any progress in understanding the security breach, Mayor Weil acknowledged the details known to the public but highlighted the perplexity surrounding the swift and apparently effortless nature of the theft. He expressed surprise at the ease with which the thieves accessed the wooden window and the absence of cameras in the area.
Regarding his responsibility as the mayor of the area where the Louvre is situated, Mayor Weil emphasized that while the museum is a national institution under the Ministry of Culture’s jurisdiction, efforts have been made to collaborate on enhancing security measures and infrastructure within the museum premises.
In response to Minister Dati’s claim that the museum’s security system did not fail, Mayor Weil pointed to the necessity of acknowledging failures and issues in such circumstances, indicating that it would be challenging to assert that everything proceeded flawlessly during the heist.
As investigations continue, Mayor Weil refrained from sharing specific details on the progress in identifying the culprits or recovering the stolen items. He noted the professionalism of the perpetrators and the ongoing efforts to apprehend those involved.
