In Mali, armed individuals have tragically ended the life of a TikTok influencer who had been expressing support for the country’s military. Mariame Cissé was forcibly taken from a marketplace in Echel on Friday and later executed in front of a gathering at Independence Square in Tonka, as reported by Yehia Tandina, the mayor of Timbuktu. The mayor of Tonka, Mamadou Konipo, acknowledged the incident but lacked additional details.
Tonka, situated about 150 kilometers from Timbuktu along the Niger River, is known to be an area where the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) is active. However, no specific group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Cissé, who was not affiliated with the military, occasionally shared images of herself in military attire with her substantial following of over 140,000 individuals. This online presence likely attracted the attention of the assailants.
Yehia Tandina mentioned that Cissé had received threats prior to her abduction. The tragic incident was corroborated by two local sources who opted to remain anonymous due to safety concerns. Although neither witnessed the execution directly, one source recounted the details from a witness in the crowd, while the other source received information from Cissé’s family.
In a video shared on TikTok, Cissé appeared in military gear with the caption “Vive Mali,” aiming to promote her community and show support for the Malian army. Mali has been grappling with armed conflicts since 2012, with the situation escalating over the years. The military took control in 2020, citing the need to address insecurity, followed by another coup the next year, leading to further deterioration of security conditions.
Armed groups, notably JNIM, are active in vast rural areas of the country. Mali is currently facing a fuel blockade imposed by JNIM, exacerbating the challenges faced by the nation.
