“Typhoon Kalmaegi: Philippines Declares State of Emergency”

-

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced a state of emergency following the devastating impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which has caused extensive damage in central provinces, resulting in over 114 fatalities and 127 individuals currently unaccounted for. Most of the casualties occurred due to drowning in flash floods, particularly in the severely affected province of Cebu, before the typhoon moved out of the region and into the South China Sea.

The typhoon’s impact has affected nearly two million people, with over 560,000 villagers displaced, including around 450,000 individuals relocated to emergency shelters. The declaration of a state of emergency aims to expedite the allocation of funds, prevent food hoarding, and curb price gouging.

Kalmaegi transitioned away from western Palawan province and into the South China Sea with sustained winds reaching up to 130 km/h and gusts up to 180 km/h, as reported by meteorologists. The majority of the reported deaths occurred in Cebu, where the typhoon triggered flash floods and led to the swelling of rivers and waterways.

The catastrophic flooding in Cebu resulted in at least 49 fatalities, with additional casualties from landslides and falling debris. Rescue efforts have been ongoing, with several individuals still missing in Cebu and neighboring provinces. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of years of quarrying on nearby rivers, exacerbating the flooding situation in Cebu.

The province of Cebu, which had already been grappling with the aftermath of a recent earthquake, declared a state of calamity to facilitate the swift disbursement of emergency funds. As Kalmaegi moves towards Vietnam and Thailand, authorities are taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents and minimize the potential impact of the storm on these regions.

The Philippines, known for its vulnerability to natural disasters, faces numerous challenges posed by typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic activities. The country remains vigilant and prepared for such calamities, with a focus on mitigating risks and ensuring the safety of its population.
