North Korea Tests Hypersonic Missiles: Military Strength Escalates

-

North Korea has announced the successful test launch of advanced hypersonic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads as part of its efforts to bolster its military strength amid escalating tensions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un asserts that the country is enhancing its nuclear deterrent capabilities by developing weapons intended to overpower South Korea’s defenses. The recent test of the hypersonic system, reported by North Korean state media, followed South Korea’s military detection of multiple missiles launched from a location south of Pyongyang, flying approximately 217 miles northeast before landing on the ground.

The missile tests coincide with the gathering of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in South Korea for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.

The US Forces Korea acknowledged North Korea’s ballistic launches and its persistent pursuit of long-range missile capabilities, emphasizing adherence to UN Security Council sanctions and reaffirming unwavering commitment to its alliance with Seoul.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, the hypersonic projectiles launched by North Korea accurately hit a target in the country’s northern region. The system is described as strategic, suggesting the missiles are intended to be equipped with nuclear warheads.

While the specific name of the tested missile system was not disclosed, North Korea showcased new weaponry at a recent military parade, including a short-range ballistic system featuring hypersonic glide vehicles.

In recent years, North Korea has been conducting tests on various missile systems incorporating hypersonic technology, aimed at achieving speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound. The agility and velocity of such weapons are designed to evade regional missile defense systems, although experts have raised doubts regarding the consistency of North Korea’s claimed test speeds.

Pak Jong Chon, a senior military official in Kim’s regime present during the recent tests, praised the performance of the cutting-edge weapon system and affirmed the country’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities.

During the parade on October 10, Kim unveiled a new intercontinental ballistic missile labeled as the nation’s most potent nuclear asset, expanding the arsenal capable of reaching the US mainland.

Analysts suggest that North Korea might be preparing to test the missile in the upcoming weeks, ahead of a significant ruling party conference in early 2026, where Kim is anticipated to unveil key policy directions, potentially affecting relations with the United States. Following the breakdown of nuclear negotiations with Trump in 2019 due to disputes over economic sanctions, Kim has accelerated weapons testing activities.

The recent ballistic missile launches mark North Korea’s first such tests since South Korean President Lee Jae Myung assumed office in June, emphasizing peace restoration on the Korean Peninsula. Despite Lee’s offer for dialogue, Kim has rejected talks with the South and insisted on the abandonment of US denuclearization demands for any future diplomacy to resume.
