“Ukrainian Soldiers Earn Points for Drone Strikes in ‘Brave1 Market'”

-

Ukrainian soldiers are utilizing a point-based system inspired by video games to incentivize successful drone strikes. The system, known as the Brave1 Market, rewards soldiers with points based on their military achievements, such as 12 points for eliminating a Russian soldier and 40 points for destroying a tank.

According to Tim Mak, a war correspondent in Kyiv, soldiers can access the Brave1 Market online to view available defense technology for purchase using their earned points. The system allows soldiers to acquire more equipment and drones by accumulating points through confirmed kills and capturing enemy soldiers.

The Brave1 Market, often described as an Amazon-style marketplace for war, was launched in April and expanded in August. Currently, 400 drone units are actively participating in the system to earn points. Notably, the system also rewards points for actions beyond killing, like wounding an enemy soldier (eight points) or capturing a Russian soldier alive (120 points).

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, expressed support for the system, stating that it boosts military motivation and aids in halting enemy advances. While some critics, like Christian Enemark, an International Relations professor at the University of Southampton, raise concerns about the system potentially desensitizing soldiers to the gravity of their actions, Fedorov emphasized the importance of military readiness in the face of aggression.

In contrast to Russia’s cash incentives for tank destruction, Ukraine’s system allows units to spend points on essential military equipment tailored to their specific operational needs. This decentralized approach to procurement enables local commanders to address immediate challenges effectively.

While acknowledging ethical dilemmas surrounding the gamification of war, Tim Mak defends the system as a necessary tool in the ongoing conflict. He emphasizes that criticism often stems from individuals distant from the harsh realities faced by those directly engaged in combat.

As warfare technology evolves, experts like Enemark stress the importance of upholding ethical standards, particularly in distinguishing between combatants and civilians. While advancements in military technology are inevitable, ethical considerations must remain paramount to ensure adherence to moral expectations.

Overall, the unique points-based system adopted by Ukraine reflects the country’s strategic response to the conflict with Russia, aiming to safeguard national sovereignty amidst ongoing hostilities.
