In the late hours of the night, Donald Trump unveiled a significant escalation in his initiative to deport legal immigrants to the United States in response to the recent incident in Washington DC. Following an attack that resulted in the death of one National Guard member and severe injuries to another, allegedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, Trump took to Truth Social to declare that his actions would not be limited to those involved in the shooting. Instead, he vowed to target any immigrant community he perceives as undermining the country.
Trump emphasized the necessity of “REVERSE MIGRATION” as a solution and indicated a halt on migration from particular regions while focusing on expelling individuals who do not contribute positively to the United States or exhibit love for the country. He announced the termination of all federal benefits to non-citizens and warned that even citizens could have their status revoked if they disrupt domestic peace. His deportation plan would extend to any foreign national deemed a public burden, security threat, or incompatible with Western Civilization.
Furthermore, Trump clarified that individuals holding permanent residency status, commonly known as “green card” holders, would not be exempt from the deportation measures. Despite the lack of connection between the Somali community and the recent tragedy, Trump shifted blame towards Somalis in Minnesota during his online message, singling out specific individuals and making derogatory remarks about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.
Responding to inquiries about the Somali community’s relevance to the shooting, Trump admitted there was no direct link but proceeded to criticize Somalis for alleged financial exploitation and questioned the aid provided to Somalia. Disregarding facts presented by Homeland Security officials and the Department of Justice, Trump persisted in his unfounded claims about vetting processes and the influx of illegal migrants during the Biden administration.
In a press interaction, Trump avoided confirming his administration’s role in granting asylum to the suspected shooter and reiterated his plan to remove all individuals granted asylum. Despite challenges to the accuracy of his statements, Trump continued to spread misinformation regarding immigration statistics and policies, perpetuating his baseless narrative of mass illegal migration under the previous administration.
