A Braintree couple, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy program trial. They have replaced their gas boiler with a data center containing over 500 computer banks, situated in their shed. This innovative system generates heat that is then channeled into their hot water supply.
Previously, the Bridges were spending £375 monthly to heat their two-bedroom bungalow. Since the installation of the data center in December 2024, their bills have plummeted to a range of £40 to £70. Terrence Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at the economic heating solution, mentioning the improved comfort for his wife, who suffers from spinal stenosis.
The revolutionary HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify and part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to assist low-income households in transitioning to net zero emissions. The Bridges also had solar panels installed on their roof as part of the initiative.
Pleased with the outcome, Mr. Bridges highlighted the warmth and efficiency of the system, which now heats their entire bungalow evenly without any cold spots. Emphasizing the system’s convenience and cost-effectiveness, he recommended it to others, noting its potential to benefit more households in the future.
Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, emphasized the company’s mission to combat fuel poverty by delivering clean and affordable energy solutions. Daniel Greenwood from Eastlight Community Homes commended the project for its contribution to creating warmer, greener, and more cost-effective housing options.
With plans to expand the initiative to more homes, the project leaders aim to support vulnerable households with sustainable technology and lower heating costs. The ultimate goal is to reach 100,000 units annually by 2030, ensuring that all can benefit from environmentally friendly advancements as the UK progresses towards a greener future.
