A film focusing on a polar bear, co-produced by Yukon resident Mike Code, has clinched a prestigious award at the renowned Sundance Film Festival. “Nuisance Bear” secured the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Documentary category, a surprise that left Code thrilled and amazed.
The documentary presents a fictionalized account of a lone polar bear navigating challenges in the Arctic, particularly human-bear interactions. Code, speaking on CBC’s Midday Cafe, explained how the film delves into the significance of the bear to Churchill, Manitoba, and Arviat, Nunavut, without directly comparing the two communities’ approaches to dealing with bear incursions.
Having grown up in both Churchill and Arviat and witnessing numerous polar bears, Code shared that his father, who was a teacher in Arviat and a wildlife cinematographer in Churchill, influenced his passion for wildlife. The collaboration with the future directors of “Nuisance Bear,” Jack Wiseman and Gabriela Osio Vanden, began at the Hot Docs film festival in 2019.
Filming for the project commenced in Churchill in 2023, utilizing advanced car-mounted cameras with specialized stabilization technology to capture unique shots of the bears. Code highlighted that the unprecedented footage and compelling narrative of the film left audiences at the festival awestruck.
Attending Sundance signifies recognition for producing high-quality filmmaking, providing an excellent platform to network with industry peers and promote the project. Code emphasized the significance of winning competitions like Sundance, equating it to earning potential Oscar nominations.
