“Canada’s ‘Buy Canadian’ Policy Prioritizes Local Businesses and Materials”

-

The federal government’s new “Buy Canadian” initiative is set to begin today, marking a significant shift in its procurement practices. Introduced earlier this autumn, this policy aims to prioritize Canadian goods and workers in government purchasing decisions. It will impact various sectors, including major projects, housing offices, defense procurement, and community infrastructure projects funded by the federal government.

Under the initial phase of the policy, contracts exceeding $25 million will give preference to Canadian businesses and materials. Additionally, construction and defense projects will now utilize Canadian steel, aluminum, and wood products that are manufactured or processed within the country. This move is seen as a supportive measure for industries that have been affected by the trade disputes initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound emphasizes that this policy reflects the government’s commitment to placing Canadian workers and industries at the forefront. By doing so, the government aims to bolster Canadian supply chains and ensure their resilience in the face of economic challenges.
