Forensic investigators have uncovered approximately 150 DNA traces, including fingerprints, left by the perpetrators of the recent £176 million jewelry heist at the Louvre. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that these samples are being meticulously analyzed to swiftly identify the four thieves responsible for the brazen daylight robbery at the iconic museum. Beccuau expressed confidence in locating the culprits, noting that if they have prior criminal records, their DNA profiles should already be on file.
The DNA evidence, comprising 150 trace samples, was found on a stolen flatbed truck, as well as on a discarded crash helmet and glove at the crime scene. Despite the suspects’ failed attempt to set fire to the vehicle before fleeing on two motorbikes, the extensive DNA left behind provides a promising lead for the ongoing investigation.
While security cameras within the Louvre did not capture the theft of seven historic pieces known as France’s “crown jewels,” external surveillance footage has been pivotal in tracing the escape route of the criminals beyond Paris and into neighboring regions. Beccuau emphasized the importance of swiftly apprehending the thieves to recover the stolen jewelry before any attempts to dismantle or dispose of the precious items.
The prosecutor has initiated a criminal investigation into the theft and conspiracy, categorizing the incident as the work of a highly organized criminal syndicate. In the event of apprehension and conviction, the perpetrators could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. The inquiry is being spearheaded by the Banditism Repression Brigade of the Judicial Police, in collaboration with the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Cultural Property.
With millions of visitors flocking to the Louvre annually, the stolen jewelry, which holds historical significance, may be concealed by the mastermind behind the heist. Alternatively, there is a risk of the pieces being dismantled and sold separately to obscure their origins. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent the illicit circulation of these valuable artifacts on the black market.
