The European Union has approved a fresh set of penalties against Russia aimed at its clandestine fleet of oil tankers and outlawing its imports of liquefied natural gas. Additionally, EU leaders have endorsed a plan, known as Readiness 2030, to ensure Europe’s defense capability against external threats by the end of the decade. This initiative comes in response to fears that Russia is testing the bloc’s defense systems.
Describing Russia’s actions in Ukraine as an existential challenge to European and global security, the leaders emphasized the need for concrete projects outlined in the plan by the European Commission. One of the main priorities will be the establishment of drone defenses to identify, monitor, and neutralize unauthorized drones, particularly following recent airspace violations near Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
The proposed European Drone Defence Initiative is part of a broader strategy called Eastern Flank Watch, aimed at bolstering defenses along Europe’s eastern borders on land and in the Baltic and Black seas, as well as against hybrid threats.
According to the commission, EU defense expenditure for this year is estimated to reach approximately 392 billion euros, almost double the amount from four years ago before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It forecasts that defense spending over the next decade could amount to around 3.4 trillion euros. To support this, the commission plans to suggest an increase in the EU’s long-term defense budget.
The newly imposed sanctions are part of a broader effort to cut off the financial resources fueling Russia’s actions in Ukraine and to pressure President Vladimir Putin to seek a resolution to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the sanctions as a significant step towards holding Russia accountable for its aggression.
Despite ongoing peace efforts led by the U.S., the conflict shows no signs of abating after more than three years of fighting. Ukrainian forces have managed to resist Russian incursions along a lengthy front line in eastern and southern Ukraine. The EU’s latest sanctions package against Russia marks the nineteenth set of penalties imposed over the course of the conflict.
