“Future of HBO Content on Crave in Canada Uncertain”

-

Canadians eagerly awaiting the debut of HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the popular series “Harry Potter” will be able to enjoy it on Crave in Canada when it premieres early next year. However, the future of Crave’s exclusive rights to HBO content, including “Harry Potter” and shows like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” and “House of the Dragon,” remains uncertain.

Paramount Skydance is in the process of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO and HBO Max, in a $110 billion takeover deal awaiting federal approval expected by the end of the year. The implications of this acquisition on existing agreements with Canadian broadcasters like Crave are unclear, leading to speculation about potential changes in how Canadian viewers access their favorite shows.

Paramount+, the subscription service from Paramount, is already available in Canada along with its free ad-supported TV service, Pluto TV. Paramount Skydance’s CEO, David Ellison, has expressed intentions to merge these platforms with HBO Max into a unified streaming service to enhance competitiveness in the streaming market.

Despite the impending changes, Bell Media, the owner of Crave, reassures viewers that their long-term deal with Warner Bros. Discovery secures Crave as the home for HBO and HBO Max programming in Canada for the foreseeable future. While the specifics of the deal’s impact on other Canadian streamers like Corus Entertainment and Rogers Sports & Media remain uncertain, stakeholders are closely monitoring the evolving landscape of streaming services in Canada.
