NASA has rescheduled the launch of the Artemis II mission to March following the discovery of a liquid hydrogen leak during a recent wet dress rehearsal. Originally set for February 8, the mission aims to send four astronauts on a 10-day lunar orbit journey.
The space agency plans to target the launch between March 6 and March 11, considering the orbital mechanics of Earth and the moon. During the rehearsal, issues arose with the hydrogen loading process, causing delays and technical challenges with the rocket’s components.
Despite setbacks, NASA officials highlighted the successful completion of hydrogen tanking and the opportunity to enhance operational procedures based on past experiences. The team remains optimistic about resolving the rocket issues without relocating it from the launchpad, a time-consuming process due to the vessel’s size and transport requirements.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing such issues early through wet dress rehearsals for a successful mission outcome. Safety remains a top priority for NASA, ensuring readiness for the historic Artemis II mission.
As a result of the launch delay, the crew members, including Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, have been released from quarantine. They will re-enter quarantine closer to the new launch window.
Artemis II is part of NASA’s Artemis moon program, focusing on testing spacecraft functions and life support systems in preparation for future missions, including Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the moon. The broader Artemis program seeks to establish a sustained human presence on the lunar surface.
NASA officials plan to assess data from the recent rehearsal before scheduling the next wet dress rehearsal.
