In Smithers, British Columbia, a black bear cub that was severely burned in December is currently undergoing recovery at a sanctuary. The cub sustained serious burns on its feet, face, and back while hibernating in a slash pile near Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
The Northern Lights Wildlife Society took action on December 20 to care for the bear, now named Valkyrie. Angelika Langen, the society’s manager and co-founder, mentioned that Valkyrie’s treatment is progressing well, with her face healing satisfactorily. However, her paws require more time for healing, as they are being treated with creams and bandaged to prevent infections.
Valkyrie, born in January or February of 2025, will eventually be introduced to other bears under the care of the sanctuary. There are plans to release her back into the wild in June. Langen recounted how the cub was discovered in poor condition curled up on a road in Dawson Creek, which led to the realization of her burn injuries.
Volunteers assisted in transporting Valkyrie from Prince George to Smithers after she was warmed up, making a nine-hour journey. Langen explained that hibernating bears often seek shelter in human-made debris piles, inadvertently putting themselves at risk during controlled burns. Valkyrie’s survival was deemed fortunate, especially considering the harsh winter conditions she faced after being rescued.
