Reform UK faced a setback in a significant Welsh constituency last week, signaling vulnerability for Nigel Farage’s party, according to Andy Burnham. The Mayor of Greater Manchester highlighted a growing willingness in the country to confront and impede the right-wing movement. This development follows the Labour Party’s significant loss in the Caerphilly Senned by-election, a seat they had held since its establishment in 1999.
Despite significant investment and being favored by bookmakers, Reform was defeated in the election, with Plaid Cymru securing 47% of the votes compared to Reform’s 36%.
In a discussion with The Mirror’s Real Britain columnist Ros-Wynne Jones, Burnham emphasized the defeat of Reform as a positive sign, indicating a strong desire to oppose and challenge them.
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram also emphasized the need for a more assertive approach in dealing with Reform, acknowledging the challenges faced by the Labour Party due to the rising popularity of the Greens.
Burnham expressed satisfaction with Lucy Powell winning the deputy leadership contest and stressed the importance of a united front in combating Reform’s populist right-wing ideology.
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth hailed the election result as a validation of their vision for Wales, emphasizing a message of hope and progress over division. He asserted that Plaid Cymru is now positioned as the primary choice for Wales, capable of countering the influence of billionaire-backed Reform and offering a more inclusive and prosperous future for all citizens. The outcome in Caerphilly signals a readiness for new leadership in Wales, with Plaid Cymru at the forefront of this movement.
