Pakistan’s Minister of Interior reported that a suicide bomber detonated explosives near a police vehicle outside the gate of a district court in Islamabad, the capital city, resulting in the death of 12 individuals and injuring 27 others on Tuesday. The Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, mentioned that the assailant attempted to enter the court premises but targeted a police vehicle when unsuccessful. The explosion, confirmed to be from a suicide bomber by police investigators, caused panic in the crowded area outside the court.
The Jamaat-ul-Ahrar group, a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack, as stated by the group’s leader, Omar Mukaram Khurasani. However, conflicting messages emerged, with an influential commander within the group, Sarbakaf Mohmand, disavowing any connection to the incident. Following the death of the head of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar in Afghanistan in 2022, some members rejoined the TTP, while others maintained distance, indicating internal discord among the insurgents.
Security officials and rescue workers quickly responded to the scene of the bombing outside the district court in Islamabad. The ability of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar to carry out an attack in the Pakistani capital is concerning given the ongoing challenges faced by the government, including a resurgent Pakistani Taliban, border tensions, and a delicate ceasefire with Afghanistan.
In a separate incident, Pakistani security forces thwarted a militant attempt to take cadets hostage at an army-run college in a northwestern province. The operation involved a suicide car bomber and five other Pakistani Taliban members targeting the facility. The TTP denied involvement in this attack, underscoring the complex security situation in the region.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated recently, with cross-border conflicts and failed peace talks further complicating the situation. The international community, including the United States, China, and the United Nations, condemned the attacks and called for a thorough investigation to hold all perpetrators accountable.
