“Stellantis Considers Selling Stake in Canadian EV Battery Plant”

-

Stellantis, a major global car manufacturer, is considering selling its stake in a large electric vehicle battery plant in Canada. This decision is part of a broader shift in their electric vehicle strategy, resulting in a substantial 22 billion Euro hit. CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized the company’s commitment to aligning with customer preferences in a recent statement.

Additionally, Stellantis plans to divest its 49% share in NextStar Energy, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, responsible for constructing a $5 billion battery facility in Windsor, Ontario. Despite this move, Stellantis remains dedicated to low-emission technology by retaining a team of engineers in Windsor focused on electric vehicle and battery research.

Stellantis previously invested $3.6 billion in Ontario operations in 2022 to transition to electric vehicle production, supported by government funding. The company’s ongoing investment in research and development, including a cutting-edge Battery Pack Testing Facility in Windsor, reinforces Canada’s position as a leader in EV innovation.

Although facing challenges in the automotive sector due to market shifts and trade policies, Stellantis continues to prioritize research and development in Windsor. The company has expanded its Automotive Research and Development Centre staff to 800 employees, with a focus on developing various powertrains, not limited to electric vehicles. Stellantis also plans to establish a state-of-the-art technology center for advanced battery development in North America.

Despite the strategic realignment, Stellantis maintains a diverse range of powertrains in its vehicle lineup, including both gas-powered and electric versions of models like the Windsor-built Dodge Charger. Furthermore, the company’s recent announcement of hiring opportunities in sales and marketing across Canada signifies a significant growth phase for Stellantis in the region.
