Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to cease operations in the UK by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, communicated to customers via email that discussions are ongoing, with bookings suspended beyond December 31. Taylor stated that Zipcar is initiating formal consultations with UK staff with the proposal to discontinue operations in the UK.
Existing customers who have reserved cars for Christmas will still be able to access them as planned. However, those with bookings for the New Year will be contacted by the company. Refunds will be provided to members with reservations post-December 31, and cancellation fees will be waived.
The manager emphasized that while the UK operations are being proposed for closure, customer accounts will stay active until a final decision is reached. Zipcar, an American company, offers hourly and extended rentals for cars and vans through a mobile app, featuring three membership plans with varying costs.
The reason behind the sudden decision to close UK operations was not disclosed by the car rental firm. While US operations will continue without interruption, customers must have US membership to utilize Zipcar services there.
As indicated in its recent financial accounts, the UK branch had 71 employees by the end of the previous year. The accounts revealed increased losses amounting to £5.7 million in 2024 due to reduced customer activity.
Zipcar’s financial report attributed the increased losses to various cost pressures, including rising electricity and insurance costs, and a volatile market affecting residual values. Declining revenue was primarily due to fewer trips and shorter durations, reflecting the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on discretionary spending.
