Masked Israeli settlers launched an attack in the occupied West Bank, throwing stones, setting fire to dairy trucks, farmland, and Bedouin structures, resulting in injuries to four individuals. The incident, part of a recent surge in settler assaults, was met with a swift response from Israeli soldiers who intervened to control the situation in Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf. Security forces managed to disperse the confrontation.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, three individuals were treated for injuries sustained from beatings with sticks and stones. Meanwhile, Israeli police apprehended four Israeli suspects for questioning in connection with the violent acts, labeling it as “extremist violence.”
The violence escalated as the masked settlers regrouped near the Baron Industrial Zone, where they attacked soldiers and damaged a military vehicle. Palestinian Minister Muayyad Shaaban condemned the attacks as part of an ongoing campaign to displace Palestinians from their land, accusing Israel of providing protection and immunity to the settlers.
Critics have called for sanctions against groups supporting the settler movement, led by far-right Israeli politicians like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Smotrich, a proponent of annexing a significant portion of the West Bank, has overseen the construction of over 5,600 settler housing units this year alone, setting a record high.
The escalating violence in the West Bank, particularly during the olive harvest season, has drawn international concern. Recent data from the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed a sharp increase in settler attacks on Palestinians, with more than 264 incidents reported in October. The attacks, often targeting the annual olive harvest, have caused injuries and extensive damage to trees and property.
As tensions rise, there are fears of a potential third intifada sparked by settler provocations, prompting calls for international intervention to address the situation in the West Bank. The ongoing expansion of Israeli settlements in the territory remains a contentious issue, with global condemnation of the settlements as illegal under international law.
Efforts to preserve the two-state solution have been emphasized by various countries, including Canada, which recently imposed sanctions on individuals fueling extremist settler violence. The recognition of the state of Palestine by Canada and its allies underscores the continued push for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict amidst heightened tensions in the West Bank.
