Following the tragic death of a British individual due to consuming illicit alcohol overseas, a close friend has shared the harrowing experience of witnessing the gradual onset of illness after consuming contaminated shots, highlighting the urgent need for increased efforts to prevent methanol poisoning.
The Foreign Office has expanded its list of countries at risk for methanol poisoning, with eight new additions due to concerns regarding the presence of fake or adulterated alcoholic beverages. This updated list now includes Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda, in response to recent incidents. Methanol poisoning occurs when methanol is illicitly added to alcoholic drinks to boost volume and reduce costs.
Symptoms of methanol poisoning encompass nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion, with more severe signs like vision disturbances manifesting between 12 to 48 hours post-consumption.
Bethany Clarke, a 28-year-old resident of Orpington, London, embarked on a backpacking journey across southeast Asia with her companion Simone White, 28, last year. Unbeknownst to them, they ingested methanol-contaminated shots, leading to illness, which tragically proved fatal for Simone.
Expressing her sentiments on the expanded list of countries, Bethany termed it as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing the necessity for further action. Residing in Brisbane, Australia, she stressed the need for heightened awareness, remarking, “While it’s positive that more nations are being included to raise awareness, there remains substantial work ahead. Without more decisive action from the British authorities, the likelihood of additional fatalities is significant.”
Reflecting on their experiences, Bethany recounted their time in Cambodia and Laos, where they engaged in activities like river tubing and indulged in methanol-laced shots, which initially went unnoticed as they attributed their symptoms to a typical hangover. However, as their condition worsened, they recognized the signs of methanol poisoning.
Despite seeking medical assistance, Simone’s health deteriorated rapidly, eventually resulting in her passing. Bethany expressed the emotional toll of the loss and dedicated herself to advocacy and awareness-raising efforts, underscoring the imperative for education on methanol poisoning signs.
Highlighting the need for proactive measures, Bethany urged the UK government to intensify public education on methanol poisoning indicators, citing successful awareness campaigns in Australia. She emphasized the potential risks associated with bottled spirits and called for stringent precautions, advocating for a more cautious approach towards alcohol consumption to avert future tragedies.
