Mitchells & Butlers, the parent company of Toby Carvery, Harvester, and All Bar One, has recently raised prices on its menu due to anticipated increased costs. The company expects to incur an additional £130 million in expenses in the upcoming year, compared to the £100 million extra spent in the previous financial period.
These cost escalations are primarily a result of the recent rise in employer National Insurance contributions and minimum wage, along with an increase in food prices. The government’s announcement of a 4.1% minimum wage hike from April further contributes to the financial strain.
Phil Urban, the CEO of Mitchells & Butlers, highlighted that a significant portion of the expected additional costs is linked to the surge in beef and steak prices. Despite a 30% spike in steak prices, the company is hopeful of cost reductions in the coming year. Urban mentioned that prices across their menus and beverages have been raised by an average of 3.2% since October.
However, the company is cautious about passing on the full extent of cost pressures to customers, as excessively high prices may deter them from purchasing certain items like steak. To mitigate these challenges, Mitchells & Butlers has made operational adjustments, such as revising the menu offerings to manage costs.
Despite these financial hurdles, Mitchells & Butlers reported a 20% increase in pre-tax profits to £238 million for the year ending September 27. The company has implemented various cost-saving measures, including optimizing labor scheduling and inventory management, along with energy efficiency initiatives.
Although like-for-like sales rose by 4.3% over the year, growth declined to 3.2% in the final quarter, particularly in London and premium brand segments. Sales growth in the initial eight weeks of the new financial year stood at 3.8%.
By prioritizing cost management strategies and operational efficiencies, Mitchells & Butlers aims to navigate through the challenging economic environment while maintaining customer satisfaction and profitability.
