Britain has announced significant changes to its asylum policy, with plans to introduce temporary refugee status and extend the wait for permanent settlement to 20 years, a fourfold increase. The government, led by the Labour party, is taking a tougher stance on immigration, particularly focusing on illegal crossings from France to address the rising influence of the Reform UK party.
Inspired by Denmark’s strict approach, the UK aims to tighten its policies, including revoking the obligation to provide support such as housing and allowances to certain asylum seekers. The Home Office emphasized that support will be directed to those who contribute to the economy and communities, prioritizing taxpayers’ funds for them.
Furthermore, the government stated that refugee protection will now be temporary, subject to regular review, and could be revoked if the individual’s home country is deemed safe. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighted the extended pathway to settlement, with refugee status reviews every 2½ years, ultimately leading to a 20-year journey to permanent residency.
As part of the reforms, the government plans to address Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, aiming to adjust interpretations related to the right to family life. However, the changes have faced criticism from over 100 charities, cautioning against policies that fuel racism and violence.
In response to the increasing concern over immigration, the government intends to explore additional safe and legal routes for asylum seekers while aligning with Denmark and other European nations in terms of temporary refugee status, conditional support, and societal integration expectations.
Denmark’s stringent immigration measures, which have led to a significant decrease in asylum claims and high deportation rates for rejected applicants, have been cited as a model for the UK’s reforms. Despite the effectiveness in reducing asylum claims, Denmark’s policies have been criticized for creating hostile conditions for migrants and prolonging the uncertainty for asylum seekers.
In contrast, the Refugee Council emphasized that refugees do not select asylum systems based on comparison but often choose the UK due to family connections, language familiarity, or existing support networks that facilitate a fresh start in a safe environment.
