Despite strong support in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate for a bill mandating the disclosure of information on Jeffrey Epstein, concerns linger among some lawmakers that President Donald Trump may find ways to avoid revealing details about the deceased sex trafficker’s actions. The worry is that the Department of Justice (DOJ) could use a legal loophole introduced by Trump to withhold crucial documents pertaining to investigations into Epstein’s exploitation of minors.
The bill, known as the Epstein Files Transparency Act, recently passed through Congress and allows the DOJ to hold back or redact any records that might jeopardize an ongoing federal inquiry or prosecution. Republican Thomas Massie, a co-sponsor of the bill, expressed apprehension about Trump’s decision to initiate investigations into Epstein’s ties with certain Democrats, suggesting that these probes could be used as a pretext to keep the files under wraps.
Once Trump signs the bill, the DOJ is required to release all unclassified materials related to its inquiries into Epstein within 30 days. This step, which the Trump administration could have taken independently earlier, has been met with resistance since July, when the DOJ announced a halt to the release of further Epstein-related files and claimed not to possess a list of his clients.
Advocates for transparency fear that the White House may continue to delay the full disclosure of the files. Spencer Kuvin, an attorney for some of Epstein’s victims, raised concerns about the recent investigations ordered by Trump, suggesting a possible ulterior motive to withhold additional materials from the public by citing ongoing inquiries. If such a scenario unfolds, Kuvin anticipates that some survivors may resort to legal action to compel the DOJ to release the information.
Jena-Lisa Jones, an Epstein abuse survivor who supports Trump, emphasized the nonpartisan nature of sexual abuse and urged the president not to weaponize the files against political adversaries. Jones stressed the importance of taking a moral stance and supporting the release of the files without politicizing the issue.
