Iranian Woman Beheaded by Husband, Parents Pardon

-

A man in Iran who brutally beheaded his wife and paraded her head as a trophy has been pardoned by the victim’s parents, leading to a reduced prison sentence. The incident occurred in Ahvaz, where Mona Heydari, 17, was forcibly taken from a car and killed by Sajjad Heydari and his brother Heydar. Despite shocking video evidence of the perpetrator showcasing the victim’s severed head, he received a lenient punishment.

Mona, who was married off at the age of 12, fled her abusive husband and sought refuge in Turkey with another man. However, her father located her and persuaded her to return to Iran. When Heydari refused her request for a divorce, the tragic events unfolded. Although her parents could have invoked Iran’s Islamic law of retribution, they opted not to, resulting in a lesser sentence for the perpetrator.

The court sentenced Heydari to seven-and-a-half years for murder and an additional eight months for intentional assault. His brother, who disposed of the victim’s body, received a 45-month prison term for complicity in the crime. The court also heard that Mona’s father defended the early marriage, claiming the violence was normal, and praised the husband as a good provider.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran’s Women’s Committee revealed that Mona was forced to marry her cousin at 12 and endured domestic abuse. The organization highlighted the prevalence of honor killings in Iran, citing statistics of 375 to 450 cases annually. The lack of criminalization of these acts has led to a surge in such crimes, particularly in certain regions of the country.

The horrific incident involving Mona’s murder sparked outrage and raised concerns about the failure to address honor killings effectively. The victim’s tragic story sheds light on the need for stricter laws and enforcement to prevent such atrocities in the future.
