“Maritime Archaeologist Reveals Luxury Ancient Barge Find”

-

Maritime archaeologist Franck Goddio recently shared insights in a comprehensive interview regarding the discovery of what is believed to be an ancient pleasure barge off the coast of Alexandria. The opulent vessel, dating back to the early first century AD, was found submerged near the island of Antirhodos, once part of Alexandria’s grand port.

This wooden boat, approximately 35 meters in length, housed around 20 rowers and featured a lavish pavilion at its center, likely adorned with exquisite decorations. Not intended for long sea voyages, it probably navigated the channel between Alexandria and Canopus on the Nile. Of particular interest is its unique architectural design, characterized by a flat-bottomed bow paired with a rounded stern, aligning perfectly with historical depictions of pleasure barges known as thalamegos.

The discovery, a result of underwater expeditions conducted by Goddio and the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry for Antiquities, sheds light on a fascinating aspect of Egyptian history previously depicted in ancient art and texts. The findings, detailed by the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology, have unveiled a rare glimpse into the luxurious journeys undertaken by the elite of ancient Egypt on the Nile.

While the vessel’s purpose as a pleasure barge seems probable, Goddio suggests an alternative theory that it may have served as a religious vessel dedicated to the goddess Isis. The boat’s preservation under sediment, possibly due to catastrophic events in the mid-first century AD, has added to its mystique and significance in maritime archaeology. The vessel remains undisturbed in its underwater resting place, preserved for future generations to appreciate the rich history it encapsulates.

Experts, including Egyptologist Caroline Arbuckle MacLeod, emphasize the importance of this discovery in illustrating the pivotal role of the Nile in ancient Egypt’s maritime activities. The vessel’s significance lies not only in its historical context but also in its potential to offer valuable insights into ancient seafaring and religious practices along the Nile.
