Nigel Farage is facing calls to denounce one of his party’s MPs who expressed frustration at the prevalence of Black and Asian individuals in advertisements. Sarah Pochin, a member of Reform UK, made these remarks during an appearance on TalkTV in response to a viewer’s question about diversity in TV commercials.
In agreement with a caller who criticized the portrayal of white people in adverts, the Runcorn and Helsby MP voiced her discontent. Pochin stated, “It irritates me to see adverts predominantly featuring non-white individuals rather than white ones.”
During further discussion with host Peter Cardwell, Pochin reiterated her stance, asserting that a “woke” culture had overtaken television. She emphasized the lack of representation of white families in advertising, particularly in contrast to the diversity seen in urban areas like London.
These comments drew criticism from Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party, who called on Farage to clarify his position on Pochin’s remarks. Turley condemned the focus on individuals’ skin color in evaluating British identity, labeling it divisive and urging for unity instead.
Following the backlash, Pochin clarified her statement, attributing her initial comments to the advertising industry’s intense focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She expressed regret for any offense caused and pledged to be more precise in her language in the future.
