“MPs Eye Prince Andrew’s Future Amid Royal Controversy”

-

MPs may potentially discuss Prince Andrew’s behavior, his expansive 30-room mansion, and the likelihood of him losing his dukedom. The Government has refrained from allocating time in the House of Commons for MPs to address Andrew’s situation, as the Royal family prefers Parliament to focus on pressing matters. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that the topic could arise on days when ministers do not control the parliamentary agenda.

A member from the Liberal Democrat party hinted that they might utilize one of their opposition days to facilitate a discussion on Andrew’s actions. Reportedly, the prince is contemplating vacating his Royal Lodge residence due to the controversy surrounding the nominal rent he pays for the property. Discussions with representatives of Charles are ongoing, with key issues revolving around the location of his new home and financial compensation related to his tenure at the lodge.

In an attempt to put an end to years of controversy sparked by allegations of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre, Andrew renounced his dukedom and other honors. Despite vehemently denying the allegations, he faced significant backlash, particularly concerning the property where he has resided rent-free since 2003. The rules outlined in Erskine May stipulate restrictions on discussing the conduct of the royal family members unless based on a substantive motion.

With the Government hesitant to propose a motion for Andrew’s discussion, an opposition day debate offers a platform for MPs to express their concerns. A source from the Liberal Democrats emphasized the necessity for transparency and accountability, calling for Crown Estate and Prince Andrew to provide testimony under oath in Parliament. The Liberal Democrats have one remaining opposition day in this parliamentary session, pending allocation by the government.

The source expressed hope that the King would take decisive action, suggesting that any parliamentary intervention should align with the Palace’s stance. While Andrew has relinquished the use of his Duke of York title, only an act of Parliament can officially strip him of it.
