Mel Pemble, a Para cyclist hailing from Victoria, achieved remarkable success at the recent world championships in Rio de Janeiro, securing four new medals, including a gold in the sprint event. Despite a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Pemble rebounded with her most successful medal haul to date at the world championships, setting her sights on the upcoming L.A. 2028 Games.

Competing in the C-class due to cerebral palsy affecting her right side, Pemble excelled in the newly introduced sprint and elimination events at this year’s worlds in Rio, clinching her eleventh career world medal with a historic sprint title win. Reflecting on her victory, Pemble expressed immense joy and pride in bringing the title back to Canada.

Following the near-miss for a Paralympic medal in Paris, Pemble found redemption at the world championships, attributing her success to a newfound mental approach and unwavering dedication. Transitioning from alpine skiing to cycling three years ago, Pemble’s versatility and determination have been pivotal in her sporting achievements. Training under Sébastien Travers in Bromont, Que., Pemble’s commitment and maturity have propelled her to new heights in her athletic journey.

Looking ahead to the future, Pemble is focused on the L.A. 2028 Games, aiming to expand her repertoire by targeting multiple events, thanks to a revamped training regimen emphasizing endurance. Coach Travers highlighted the significant changes made to Pemble’s training strategy, likening the shift to Usain Bolt transitioning from sprinting to longer distances. Despite the challenges, Pemble’s resilience and adaptability continue to define her sporting career.
