Renowned exoplanet researcher Sara Seager is set to return to Canada after leaving her position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to join the University of Toronto, her alma mater. Seager, known for her work in seeking out Earth 2.0 and exploring the potential for life beyond our planet, is excited to bring her research projects back to her native country. With nearly two decades of experience at MIT, Seager felt the timing was right for her to come back to Toronto, where she grew up.

Seager will be joining the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) at the University of Toronto as a professor in September 2026. She aims to inspire and mentor the next generation of researchers while continuing her groundbreaking projects. One of Seager’s ambitious endeavors includes investigating the possibility of life in the clouds of Venus, a project that gained attention after a study reported the presence of phosphine in the planet’s atmosphere, hinting at potential microbial life forms.

Another significant focus of Seager’s research is the search for habitable exoplanets. Having witnessed the discovery of over 6,000 exoplanets since obtaining her PhD in 1994, Seager is leading initiatives like Project Starshade, which aims to develop innovative spacecraft technology to detect Earth-like planets that may be hidden from traditional telescopic observation methods. Despite temporary setbacks, Seager remains committed to advancing this mission.

The decision for Seager to return to Canada was influenced by a desire to contribute to the country’s scientific landscape, especially in the wake of funding cuts to research programs in the United States. CITA’s director, Shantanu Basu, expressed his enthusiasm for Seager’s arrival, emphasizing her expertise in exoplanetary science and interdisciplinary approach that aligns with the institute’s mission to push scientific boundaries.

Seager’s research extends beyond exoplanets to explore the fundamental building blocks of life, involving collaborations with experts in organic chemistry and aerosols engineering. As she prepares to embark on this new chapter at the University of Toronto, Seager looks forward to the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field of astrophysics while reconnecting with her roots in Canada.
