“Trial Reveals Severe Malnutrition in Adopted Boy”

-

In the days leading up to his passing, a 12-year-old boy, under the care of two women in Burlington, Ontario, was suffering from severe malnutrition and weighed less than he did at the age of 6, as revealed by Dr. Emma Cory, a pediatrician serving as an expert witness in the trial of Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber. The duo, who have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, were in the process of adopting the boy, identified as L.L., and his younger brother, known as J.L., with both boys’ identities protected under a publication ban.

The trial, presided over by Justice Clayton Conlan in Superior Court in Milton, is ongoing and is anticipated to extend into November. The prosecution alleges that Cooney and Hamber mistreated the boys, confining L.L. for the majority of his final year, surveilling them through cameras, limiting their food intake, and enforcing exercise regimens.

During the trial, the defense has raised concerns about the lack of support from the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) for the prospective adoptive parents, as well as L.L.’s behavioral challenges. Additionally, questions have been raised regarding the possibility of an eating disorder or other food-related issues in L.L.

Dr. Emma Cory, a pediatrician specializing in abuse and neglect cases at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, testified about L.L.’s declining health leading up to his demise on December 21, 2022. She highlighted significant weight loss and stunted growth in L.L., contrasting his previous healthy state while under long-term foster care in Ottawa.

Despite uncertainties about the cause of L.L.’s death, Dr. Cory emphasized the severe consequences of malnutrition in children, potentially leading to fatality. The prosecution further asserted that Cooney and Hamber exhibited negligence by not seeking medical intervention despite clear signs of L.L.’s deteriorating health, as indicated in recovered text messages.

On the night of L.L.’s tragic passing, responders found him in critical condition, dressed in a wetsuit, and resembling a much younger child. The circumstances surrounding L.L.’s death, along with the actions of Cooney and Hamber, continue to be examined in the ongoing trial.
