Actor Kiefer Sutherland was taken into custody in the early hours of Monday following a report of an altercation involving a ride-hailing driver in Los Angeles, as confirmed by authorities. The incident occurred shortly after midnight near the junction of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Ave., just south of Hollywood Hills.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, it was determined that the 59-year-old Canadian actor, known for his Emmy award-winning performances, got into a ride-hailing vehicle and physically assaulted the driver while also making criminal threats towards the victim. The driver did not sustain any injuries requiring medical attention at the time, as per police reports.
Sutherland was apprehended on suspicion of making criminal threats and subsequently released from custody a few hours later upon posting a $50,000 US bond, based on jail records. His initial court appearance is scheduled for February 2, according to the same records.
An email seeking comment from Sutherland’s representatives went unanswered at the time of reporting.
The well-known actor is most recognized for his iconic role as federal agent Jack Bauer in the thrilling TV series “24” and its various offshoots. Additionally, he has starred in notable films such as “The Lost Boys” and “Young Guns,” as well as featured in movies directed by Rob Reiner including “Stand by Me” and “A Few Good Men.”
Sutherland, hailing from a family of actors, is the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, with his lineage tracing back to his grandfather Tommy Douglas, the former premier of Saskatchewan celebrated for introducing universal healthcare in Canada.
