Sandy Brondello is poised to make history as the inaugural coach of the Toronto Tempo. Following her tenure with the New York Liberty, where she guided the team to their first WNBA championship in 2024, Brondello’s contract was not renewed due to a challenging season marred by injuries that culminated in an early exit from the playoffs.
Brondello has now secured the coaching position with the newly-formed Tempo, who are scheduled to debut in the upcoming season. Despite being a contender for the head coach role at the Dallas Wings and the Seattle Storm, Brondello opted for the opportunity with the expansion team.
The announcement was initially disclosed by The Next website. During her four-year stint with New York, Brondello achieved a commendable record of 107-53, setting a new benchmark for the most wins in the franchise’s history. While the Liberty started strong with a record nine consecutive victories, their momentum waned over subsequent months due to various injuries.
Prior to her tenure with the Liberty, Brondello steered the Phoenix Mercury to a championship during her eight-year tenure there. Following her success in leading the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 2021, Brondello transitioned to the Liberty in 2022.
After falling short in the 2023 finals against Las Vegas, New York bounced back in the following season to clinch the championship in a thrilling Game 5 overtime triumph over Minnesota.
