Grammy award-winning artist Chappell Roan has responded to claims made by Brazilian-Italian footballer Jorginho regarding an incident involving his 11-year-old stepdaughter and a security guard. Jorginho, known as Jorginho Frello and playing for Flamengo, revealed that his wife and stepdaughter encountered the singer at a hotel in Sao Paulo where both parties were staying for the Lollapalooza Brazil music festival. The footballer explained that his daughter recognized Roan during breakfast and simply wanted to confirm her identity without making any requests. However, he alleged that a security guard approached their table and behaved aggressively towards his family.
In response, Roan took to Instagram to address the situation, clarifying that the security guard involved was not under her personal security detail and that she had not noticed a woman and child during the incident. The singer expressed disappointment at the assumption of ill intent and emphasized that she values her fans and does not harbor any negative feelings towards children. Roan extended her apologies to the mother and child involved, expressing sadness at the discomfort they experienced.
The controversy caught the attention of Rio’s newly elected mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, who commented on the situation by suggesting that Roan would not be permitted to perform on Copacabana Beach like other international artists. He also mentioned that Jorginho’s daughter would be honored at Shakira’s upcoming concert on the beach. Cavaliere recently assumed office, succeeding former Mayor Eduardo Paes.
Chappell Roan, known for her open embrace of queer identity and connection to drag culture, gained prominence in the pop music scene in 2024 with hits like “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Hot To Go!” from her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” She notably won the Grammy for Best New Artist by surpassing Sabrina Carpenter in the previous year.
In a follow-up, Jorginho shared a positive update, revealing his daughter’s excitement upon attending Carpenter’s performance at Lollapalooza and reassuring well-wishers that everything was resolved amicably.
